RETAILERS ASSOCIATION OF MASSACHUSETTS
BEVERLY, MA (November 17, 2011) – At The Retailers Association of Massachusetts Awards of Excellence luncheon held at Bentley University in Waltham earlier today, Chianti Tuscan Restaurant and Jazz Lounge was named “Massachusetts Restaurant of the Year”.The title is awarded to the restaurant that continuously provides their patrons with exceptional service, menu selection, and pleasurable overall experience.
Chianti Tuscan Restaurant and Jazz Lounge was also acknowledged for their ingenuity in navigating today’s tough economic times – reinventing themselves by adding a jazz club component to their already successful restaurant business.
Master of Ceremonies and RAM Board member and Founder of the RAMAES, Rick Segel said in presenting the award, “Richard Marino is a true visionary.Richard empowers his employees to make the right decisions within the established guidelines for what great customer service means to the business, the customers, the employees and the management.As a result, every employee treats the business as if it were their own.My first visit to the restaurant was when Richard was not there, but you would never have known that the boss was away.”
Owner, Richard Marino said, “I’ve always enjoyed being in the restaurant business.My other passion is listening to and playing music.Because of the proximity of Chianti to the former legendary jazz club, ‘Sandy’s Jazz Revival’, it had been a long time dream to recreate the ‘Sandy’s’ jazz scene less than a mile from where it originally stood.”
“We took a chance that if the support was there for the music back then, it would still be here today.Both patrons from ‘back in the day’, as well as a new generation of music enthusiasts fill the jazz lounge each night, taking in some of the best musical talent not only from the north shore, but Boston, New York and the entire region.There’s a magical vibe to this room.Musicians love playing here and bring their ‘A’ game to our stage every night.”
This is the fifth accolade Chianti has received this year including:“Best Cocktail” – awarded at the annual Beverly Bootstraps Best Chefs Event; “Top 150 Jazz Rooms in the World” – awarded by Downbeat Magazine; “Best Italian Restaurant” – awarded by Northshore Magazine; and most recently Beverly Main Streets “Spirit of Beverly Award” for Chianti’s long time dedication to serving Beverly’s downtown.

New Beverly cable show features local jazz
What does one web designer, an award winning independent film producer and local restaurateur have in common? A love for jazz combined with great food and ambiance.
With a year behind its belt, the North Shore Jazz Project has had its fair share of attention and success. The project is a collaborative effort co-founded by Henry Ferrini, Gloucester independent film producer best know for his portraits of Jack Kerouac and Charles Olsen; Chava Hudson, web designer, award-winning Bevcam producer and host of the monthly Bevcam cable show, Out and About and Rich Marino, owner of Chianti’s Restaurant on Cabot Street and Chianti’s Jazz Club.
Now, the Project and Chianti’s Jazz Club are moving forward with commitment to the convergence of sound, creativity, location and soul with the recent debut of Live from Chianti — a new Bevcam pilot show produced and hosted by Chava Hudson.
Hudson is producing the show with the help of her Beverly crew: Kim Allyn, cameraman and editor, Robert Dokes, camera and technical consultant, Steve Madore, camera and technical consultant and Walt Kosmowski, camera and technical consultant, and Derek Bergman from Danvers.
The show’s debut, features Danvers jazz saxophonist and regular European performer Mike Tucker. Tucker and his band’s performance featuring music from his new CD and live interview along with a tour of Chianti’s Jazz Club is just the first in a series of shows being planned.
The second show, filmed just before Christmas, features Myanna, contemporary soul/jazz saxophonist. The show can be seen on Channel 10, Tuesday at 9 p.m., Thursday at 10 p.m., and Sunday at 11 a.m. or n the show’s website livefromchianti.com.
Wardrobe and hair sponsors for Chava Hudson include Mint, an upscale consignment shop on Cabot Street, and Ann Marie’s of Salem.
“We wanted to be able to bring music right into people’s homes to encourage them to experience jazz,” said Hudson.
Hudson and Marino note the taping of the performance on location is free and open to the public. Patrons also may order from Chianti’s main menu as well as a new bar menu being introduced in this month.
“The new bar menu is reasonably priced and along with the full dinner menu options blend nicely with the music here seven nights a week,” said Marino.
The jazz revival started about a year ago with the North Shore Jazz Project’s inaugural fundraising concert hosted at Chianti’s Jazz Club. As Marino describes the coincidental blending of the group’s work he noted, “It was destiny.”
In 2007, Marino made the decision to go forward with plans to build a jazz club in the location formerly known as Cabot Liquors. In the summer of 2009, Hudson and Ferrini approached Marino with the idea of bringing back to Beverly jazz greats performing throughout the country and around the world.
Marino shared his vision of the club with the two and felt musicians and patrons would really support the venue if it were built.
Hudson notes, “When Henri and I told Rich about our ideas, he said, ‘come here I want to show something to you’ and he proceeded to bring us to the space which had yet to be built out but was excited about his vision.”
By November 2009, Chianti’s hosted the first gala fundraising for the North Shore Project and opened in March 2010. Hudson added fundraisers continue to be held just about every six weeks which included selling tickets to live music by Gid Loring and Joe Lovano to name just a few.
“We’ve had top-shelf talent coming and bringing their followers into town,” adds Marino. Just prior to Christmas Jeff Lockhart, Beyonce’s guitarist played Chianti’s. Since the club opened word has spread around the music community and it is drawing many musicians from Boston.

The trio’s love of jazz reaches back to the days when Sandy’s Jazz Revival on Cabot was hopping with often-unannounced musicians who wanted to play there. Ferrini was a friend of Sandy Berman and longtime patron and coincidentally, Rich Marino purchased Sandy Berman’s old home in 1998.

Student Jazz Clinics at Chianti Jazz Club, Beverly, MA, coming this fall.
Chianti is a newest jazz club in Beverly carrying forth the history of places like Sandy’s and Lennies on the Turnpike. Owner Rich Marino is a jazz enthusiast and was excited when the North Shore Jazz Project approached him to partner with them to help recreate a jazz mecca on the North Shore.
This fall Marino is making the club available to music educators and students from around the northshore to learn about jazz. Partnering with local musicians, NSJP has designed the following music clinics for adults and youth, to be held at various venues throughout the North Shore. With a class maximum of 25 participants, the clinic format includes approximately one hour of instruction immediately followed by a performance for family, friends and the general public.
