    Racky Thomas

    9-Midnight

Harp_at_HeatherfestRacky Thomas got his introduction to the blues while attending Berklee College of Music in Boston, Ma. when he saw Stevie Ray Vaughan perform at Northeastern's Matthews Arena circa 1987. At that time, Thomas was a guitar major without any clear direction or focus. Vaughan's performance that evening changed that; cementing what was to become an ongoing study of the music, and desire to carry on its great tradition.

Thomas formed a psuedo-blues band with some friends intent on finding work. The band enjoyed landing a few spot gigs at some local venues; and hosting a memorable 'house party' that was ultimately broken up by the local constabulary. Discouraged after auditioning for a local club owner who flatly stated "You'se ain't blues", the band fizzled.

Upon graduating from Berklee in 1991 Thomas found himself disillusioned; without a band or any prospects. While driving a cab, Mai Cramer's 'Blues After Hours' every Friday and Saturday night on Boston's public radio station WGBH was Thomas' oasis for the blues. Thomas caught on with a band calling themselves the 'Mean Red Spiders' and played around Boston at venues like the Rathskellar in Kenmore Square and Midway Cafe' in Jamaica Plain.

Los Sugar Kings is a Boston-based quartet known for their dynamic live performances, rich harmonies, intense musicianship and ability to transcend genres with an authenticity rarely heard. In their world, respect is paid to the forefathers and traditions of Afro-Cuban Son, Salsa and Rumba-Flamenca but Los Sugar Kings (named after a Cuban baseball team) also actively draw on influences from nearly every continent in their unique roots-rock-reggae fusion repertoire. All are highly accomplished on their instruments, however the true magic of Los Sugar Kings is how these four individuals come together to put on a performance worthy of any festival, party, club or concert hall.

    Krewe de Groove

kreweDeGrooveWith its transcendence of Funk, Soul, Jam, and Roots Rock, Krewe de Groove
brings together some of the best musicians in Massachusetts to create its musical family. After 16 years based out of New Orleans, guitarist/vocalist Brandon Tarricone is back on the east coast and has brought the flavor of the bayou back to New England with his original sound. Justin Lopes on B3 organ, John Iltis on drums, and Dave Walker on bass make up the Krewe’s rhythm section and their tight, syncopated pocket. Well known sax players Henley Douglas Jr and Eric Schindler make up the horn section, blowing up the funk that lays on top (literally!). Tarricone’s original compositions, vocals, and sprinkled arrangements of classic New Orleans material is combined to make every show, interesting, fun and always danceable!

"Her tones are rich, rising or falling seamlessly, and somehow she's always right in the pocket – riding the groove, placing her melodies in just the right spots, at just the right volume, with just the right twists and shimmies."

Mr. Nick & the Dirty Tricks

    9pm-midnight

    image1-2

Mr. Nick & the Dirty Tricks unites veteran musicians Nick David (a.k.a. Mr. Nick), “Lonely” Gus Carlson, Teddy B. (Bukowski) and Rick Rousseau for one of the region’s most formidable live outfits in any genre. But their hearts belong to blues.

Real blues. They play elegant, stomping and swinging classics like Little Walter’s “Mellow Down Easy,” Howlin’ Wolf’s “300 Pounds of Joy” and Wynonie Harris’ “Good Morning Judge.” Their bag of originals is a mix of rhumbas, jump blues, and boogies they’re developing for a debut album and currently taking to legions of fans in New England on their way to stages throughout the US and abroad.

“This band is a killer outfit,” says David. And that’s the truth. Everything comes together when they play: their deep mutual understanding and knowledge of blues, their originality and depth as players, and the band’s ability to put on a great show that brings people to their feet. It’s a blend that wins new converts wherever they perform.

    Lyle Brewer

    8:00pm-11:00pm

    Lyle-Brewer-400x400

Brewer has been a staple of the Boston music scene for the last ten years. Ask any musician who has worked with him and they will laud his mastery of almost any style of music, with a maturity that belies his age. “Brewer’s dexterity is often jaw-dropping. Not every guitarist can swerve from the swampy stomp of “Green Onions” into the moonglow of “Mr. Sandman” …always with the same sophistication and feeling”.

With each phrase, he identifies and embellishes upon the paths and harmonies which have been influencing us for over a century. In the years to come, when future listeners are trying to piece together the evolution of the electirc guitar and its great masters, they can listen to Lyle's records and glean an understanding of this evolution. And, such is my case, be inspired to always go deeper. Thank you Lyle.” (Boston Globe)

Willie J. Laws & Bruce Bears

    9pm - midnight

Willie J. Laws has over 25 years of performing experience and has traveled the world making music. The influences heard in the music of the Willie J. Laws Band are many and eclectic. There are deep roots in Texas music tradition and uniquely American roots music.

Raised in the Gulf Coast of Texas, Willie J. developed his "funky blues" guitar and vocal sound, influenced by Texas Blues and R&B, Tex-Mex Tejano/Conjunto, Louisiana Zydeco, and Country.

Fans call him "the Real Deal". His work over the past 25 years includes performing as the house band for The House of Blues in both Las Vegas and New Orleans, and as well as Margaritaville in the "Crescent City". He performs nationally and internationally with the Grammy award-winning Tejano band "Los Texmaniacs". While living in Texas, Louisiana, Nevada, and California he repeatedly opened for BB King, Etta James, Buddy Guy, Willie Nelson, Hall & Oates, Lynyrd Skynyrd and numerous others. Willie was mentored by, and toured throughout the US with, the late Blues great and Texan, Phillip Walker, which you also hear in Willie's playing style. Willie now lives in Massachusetts, travels from NH to NYC to Texas and beyond, and plays hardcore, authentic Blues with a twist of Zydeco, R&B and Funk.

Toni Lynn Washington first took the stage in Boston where, after sneaking past the door of as many clubs as she could (being underage at the time), she was soon wowing musicians and audiences all over the city. She had, of course, been doing this for quite some time, until one fateful night, when she proceeded to bring the house down with her performance of Ruth Brown's "5, 10, 15 (Hours Of Your Love)." Only this time, Mom was in the house! But the "buzz" had already begun.

TWO SHOWS TODAY STARTING AT 2PM

2:00pm-5:00pm   DAVE WHITNEY BIG BAND WITH NANCY MCGHEE

     davewhitneydscn1190

An extension of Dave's small bands, this fourteen piece orchestra was formed in 1989. The focus of this band is playing and preserving the classic sounds of the big band era.

The orchestra is comfortable playing for the listener and is equally at ease playing for dancers. Besides saluting the big name bands such as Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Tommy Dorsey, Glenn Miller, and Harry James, the Whitney Orchestra also plays the music of other fine bands such as Tony Pastor, Vaughn Monroe, Frankie Carle, Scat Davis and Red Nichols.

    los sugar kings
