    Rule of 3

    6:30pm-9:30pm

Screen Shot 2014-07-29 at 1.29.18 PMThe Rule of 3 is a writing principle that is well noted in most forms of culture. Simply put, it suggests that when things come in threes, they are inherently more effective and satisfying than other numbers. As a band, we believe that 3-part harmony is further evidence of this principle. Enjoy Rule of 3?s take on some of the great harmony songs from the 60’s, 70?s & 80’s!

    los sugar kings

Los Sugar Kings is a Boston-based quartet known for their dynamic live performances, rich harmonies, intense musicianship and ability to transcend genres with an authenticity rarely heard. In their world, respect is paid to the forefathers and traditions of Afro-Cuban Son, Salsa and Rumba-Flamenca but Los Sugar Kings (named after a Cuban baseball team) also actively draw on influences from nearly every continent in their unique roots-rock-reggae fusion repertoire. All are highly accomplished on their instruments, however the true magic of Los Sugar Kings is how these four individuals come together to put on a performance worthy of any festival, party, club or concert hall.

    Racky Thomas

    9-Midnight

Harp_at_HeatherfestRacky Thomas got his introduction to the blues while attending Berklee College of Music in Boston, Ma. when he saw Stevie Ray Vaughan perform at Northeastern's Matthews Arena circa 1987. At that time, Thomas was a guitar major without any clear direction or focus. Vaughan's performance that evening changed that; cementing what was to become an ongoing study of the music, and desire to carry on its great tradition.

Thomas formed a psuedo-blues band with some friends intent on finding work. The band enjoyed landing a few spot gigs at some local venues; and hosting a memorable 'house party' that was ultimately broken up by the local constabulary. Discouraged after auditioning for a local club owner who flatly stated "You'se ain't blues", the band fizzled.

Upon graduating from Berklee in 1991 Thomas found himself disillusioned; without a band or any prospects. While driving a cab, Mai Cramer's 'Blues After Hours' every Friday and Saturday night on Boston's public radio station WGBH was Thomas' oasis for the blues. Thomas caught on with a band calling themselves the 'Mean Red Spiders' and played around Boston at venues like the Rathskellar in Kenmore Square and Midway Cafe' in Jamaica Plain.

A Tribute to Billy Holiday & Lester Young

    8pm-11pm

    TRIBUTE TO LESTER YOUNG

Scotty & Melissa 1A father daughter tribute to the great musical dialogue of Billie Holiday and Lester Young, featuring:
    Melissa Shetler – Vocals
Scott Shetler – Tenor Sax and Clarinet
    Rudolph Vernas-Colas
    Bass Sven Larson
    Drums Benny Benson

Family is family. Sometimes it’s the family you’re born into and sometimes it’s the family you choose, but it’s always family, and as such the bonds run deep. Bonded by blood, or common language, inside jokes, physical traits, and for many - shared musical experiences. Billie Holiday and Lester Young became family. They recognized a common expression in each other, and you can hear that in the music when they performed together.

As a horn player, Lester brought be-bop into much of his soloing, but when it came to backing Billie it was the breathy lyricism and laid back rhythmic phrasing that always came across to me. It’s as if Lester is singing the song back to her. And in return she allows herself to take on the freedom of a horn, often avoiding stating the original melody altogether in exchange for her own emotional interpretation.

So here we are years later, my father and I, revisiting those voices and their dialogue, and listening for the nuance in their communication while exploring our own. I thinks as artists we both have moved past those early days of mimicry and are always working on developing a genuine and unique tone and expression, and just as the speech patterns and expressions of our parents and early surroundings never leave us, neither do those early musical influences.

As a solo performer, she organized a well-received tribute to her singing idols Dinah Washington and Ruth Brown, then joined the band Evil Gal; again working solo in 1994, Willson issued her debut LP, Evil Gal Blues, followed in 1996 by So Emotional. Wake Up Call marked her first release in the new millennium.

    Racky Thomas CD Release Party

    9-Midnight

going-home-coverRacky Thomas got his introduction to the blues while attending Berklee College of Music in Boston, Ma. when he saw Stevie Ray Vaughan perform at Northeastern's Matthews Arena circa 1987.

    • Winner of Best Jazz Artist 2015 New England Music Awards
